Significance of thyroid T©ý, suppression test in evaluating diffuse non-toxic goiter with raised RAIU.

Abstract
To evaluate clinically the patients with diffuse non-toxic goiter with raised radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) of thyroid and normal levels of serum T3, T4 and Free T4, histopathological studies and the effect of T3 suppression of thyroid were investigated.
The results were as follows;
1. Among twenty-five patients undergoing needle biopsies, 19 cases (76%) were diagnosed as lymphocytic thyroiditis and the other 6 cases (24%) were follicular adenoma.
2. The thyroids RAIU of lymphocytic thyroiditis group were significantly suppressed after T3 administration, while those of follicular adenoma group were not suppressed.
3. These results suggest that thyroid T3 suppression test might be a non-invasive method to differentiate lymphocytic thyroiditis from multiple adenoma in the patients with raised RAIU and euthyroid hormone levels.
